Dear Members

Welcome to 2004 and the many changes that have been taking place within Conservation Lower Zambezi (CLZ). We hope to fill you in on the latest developments throughout this edition of our newsletter.

Before we move on, it is important to appreciate that none of these changes would have happened without the team of dedicated individuals comprising the CLZ board who continue to donate their time and energy toward keeping the organisation focused.

As operations managers, we would also like to take this opportunity to say a special thank you to Musa Daya of Budu Auto Repairs & Services who has sat on the CLZ board for the past two years and, through his business, has saved the organisation several thousand dollars in maintenance.

We have included information on the support work that CLZ continues to carry out on a day to day basis but are taking the opportunity to give credit  and thanks to our funding associates at the front of this issue.

Contributions to CLZ

"Prawn Fiesta"

CLZ's first ever Lusaka Corporate Fundraiser was held at the Holiday Inn on 1st November 2003. Thanks to the exceptional organisational skills of CLZ member Kim Leatherby the night was a huge success. With an endless supply of Mozambiqan prawns, a constant flow of KWV's best wines and a "Weakest Link"® type quiz, members of Lusaka's Corporate world opened their mind's and wallets toward the efforts of Conservation Lower Zambezi. On the night, more than 6,000USD was raised for CLZ.

CLZ would particularly like to thank the following individuals and organisations for their contributions:

  • The Honourable Minister of Tourism Mr P Kalipungwa
  • Ambassador and Mrs Orla Bakdal of the Royal Danish Embassy
  • Kim Leatherby
  • Bruce Chapman & Holiday Inn, Lusaka
  • CLZ Corporate Members:
    • ChaChaCha
    • Chiawa Camp
    • Chongwe River Camp
    • Kanyemba Lodge
    • Kasaka River Lodge
    • Kayila Lodge
    • Kiubo Camp
    • Kulefu Tented Camp
    • Lower Zambezi River Camp
    • Sausage Tree Camp
  • CFAO Zambia Ltd
  • Chulumenda Farm
  • Kobil (Z) Ltd
  • KWV
  • Mercury Couriers
  • Parmalat
  • Safetech

  • Zambian Breweries

Kobil (Z) Ltd

Shane O'Neil the managing director of Kobil was the first from our Corporate Fundraisers to fulfil his pledge of support to CLZ by donating fuel and the services of his electrician.

Lower Zambezi Fishing Competition

The annual Lower Zambeiz Fishing Competition between guests of Royal Zambezi Lodge and Kasaka River Lodge is becoming a very popular event with much of the profit coming to CLZ.

This year CLZ would especially like to thank Mr Brian Bailey and team who on winning the competition donated all prize money to CLZ. The competition raised in excess of 6,000USD - thanks again to all involved.

Elefence International

USD 20,000 has been received from Elefence International through a United States Fish and Wildlife Grant to cover the costs of Patrol Equipment that has been purchased. Thanks go to Dick Houston and his committee for their efforts.

Marilyn Chase

Although Marilyn is no longer part of Elefence Internationl she continues to support CLZ on a personal level and is currently occupied with procuring suitable DVD's, videos and books for the new Environmental Education Centre.

Francois Delbee

Another cheque for 1,000USD has been received from Francois as a share of the profits from his popular publication "The Bush and Eye"; an entertaining collection of well photographed images depicting a number of classic and some more unusual scenes of the Lower Zambezi Valley.

Noel & Roslyn Stevenson

During their visit to Zambia at the end of 2003 Ian's parents Noel & Ros kindly donated 1,000USD to CLZ for operational funding.

CLZ Conservation & Education Levy

Many thanks to the management and staff of Chiawa Camp and Chongwe River Lodge who took the time and made the effort to explain to their guests the importance of CLZ in the Lower Zambezi Valley and therefore were responsible for collecting the majority share of funds raised through the Conservation & Education Levy during 2003.

Any camps who are unsure of the levy or require further stationery please do not hesitate to contact Ian & Lea at the base camp.

Afrikeye

Alex Barrett (Afrikeye's editor) arrived in Lusaka just in time for the Corporate Fundraiser before visiting the CLZ camp for an inspection of the new site and a check up on operations.

For the third year running Afrikeye has donated 10,000USD to CLZ and has stated intent to repeat this grant in 2005.

In the community

Kairara Gova Traditional Ceremony

CLZ donated 500USD worth of materials for costumes required for the Kairara Gova Traditional Ceremony held in Chiawa Village on the morning of 11th October 2003. A number of CLZ members attended the ceremony.

SEEDCO - Sorghum Seed Donation - 10th November 2003

CLZ facilitated the distribution of five tonnes of Sorghum Seed that was donated by SEEDCO (Z) Ltd to CLZ for the communities of Chiawa GMA. This is an important donation as it is one from which all families in the area benefit directly.

Sports Uniforms for Mugurameno Pimary School

Sports uniforms, sponsored by Marilyn Chase, were delivered to Mugurameno Primary School in October 2003. The uniforms have proved to be very popular and the head mistress of Mugurameno Primary School has written in appreciation for the donation.

Human Animal Conflict

CLZ facilitated the evacuation of two members of the community in February this year when they were injured from encounters with wildlife.

It is important to be aware of the pressure on wildlife at this time of year. Even though there is plenty of natural vegetation available there are some animals that have acquired a taste for the cultivated vegetable matter. Human Animal conflict is an ever increasing problem and one that ZAWA dedicates much time and effort toward alleviating.
