CLZ’s constitution includes the following objectives: promote, foster and maintain interest in the protection of wildlife.

Snared lionTo encourage recognition of the importance of safeguarding habitat and wildlife for its cultural, scientific and economic value.

To promote and support the improvement of any existing National Parks and wildlife protection areas, and sponsor the establishment of any other such areas.

To assist in all efforts to safeguard the security and permanence of the National Park and to promote its reasonable and proper development and maintenance as a National asset for the benefit of all people.

These objectives will be achieved through the accomplishment of the following five inputs:

  • Supporting the Government of Zambia or any of its departments in their efforts toward natural resource conservation.

  • Assisting the Lower Zambezi National Park warden in the development, protection and maintenance of the natural resource base in CLZ target areas.

  • Assisting GMA communities to mobilise into legally recognised bodies that are capable of managing their natural resources.

  • Increasing community awareness and knowledge of natural resource management opportunities and benefits by implementing an educational programme.

  • Supporting non-government organisations and individuals whose work furthers the goals of CLZ to protect habitat and wildlife in the Lower Zambezi Valley.

Scouts on patrolCLZ's strategy is to support organisations and individuals with their efforts toward the above goals by providing technical assistance, training, equipment and supplies. The following activities utilise CLZ funds and equipment and are implemented within the Lower Zambezi National Park and surrounding Chiawa GMA and are set out to achieve our objectives as stated above.

  • Construction of a National Park and GMA road network to assist in deployment of field officers for anti-poaching patrols and for faster response to any reported unlawful activity; construction of hilltop observation posts to aid in greater protection of the valley floor; training and deployment of ZAWA field officers in the LZNP and surrounding GMA's for anti-poaching and law enforcement activities.

  • Management of the CLZ infrastructure development project to create a "protected zone" for the possible re-introduction of rhino and other endemic species whose numbers have declined due to unnatural circumstances.

  • Facilitating and coordinating base-line surveys in the LZNP and GMA's.

  • Liaison with all stakeholders in the area for effective conservation and preservation policies.

  • Conducting aerial surveys and air assistance for anti-poaching.

  • Darting of injured wildlife for treatment and removal of snares where needed.

  • Planning a Community Based Conservation Education Project (CBCEP) that will include the construction of an education camp and purchase of relevant equipment.

  • Coordinate the development of projects that through the "wise use" of natural resources in the area will provide revenue and other direct benefits to the community.

  • Establish a "photo-tourism" area in the eastern side of Chiawa GMA with entry revenue paid directly to the community.

  • Facilitate other forms of revenue generators area in the western side of Chiawa GMA, cultural villages for tourism, museum and crafts building for river and road tourism along with other profitable visitor encouragement.
