Rhinos return Latest News 2000 Report Editor's visit

Back

November 2003

The five rhinos are doing very well - we still monitor them mostly from the plane, but the ZAWA wildlife police officers have now also started going on foot into the sanctuary and we hope that they can soon really feel comfortable around the animals, know how to react to minimise danger to themselves and, as importantly, to the rhinos themselves.

At NLCP we are keeping close tabs on where they are staying, which areas they prefer and the habits that they are establishing. It is very interesting to see the pattern over time as they obviously learn what is available inside the sanctuary.

We are collecting some information on their foodstuff and their preferences, but as the officers get into the field more we will be able to establish a more structured program. Our priority in these first months has been for the animals to settle in well, with as little disturbance as possible.
